  • Beskrivelse: The farmer Matula leaves to sell cattle at the annual market. He bids farewell to his wife and daughter. That evening after the market he plays a game of cards and takes a room for the night at an inn. After he falls asleep, the innkeeper sneaks into his room and robs him. After the farmer returns to the village, gendarmes acting on the denouncement of the innkeeper storm his home and take him away. His wife dies from grief and his daughter Marie leaves her parents' village. By chance she takes a job working for the innkeeper. After a while, the innkeeper realizes that Marie is the farmer's daughter and marries her. From that point on, the poor farmer appears to him as a phantom. Before his death, the innkeeper admits to the fraudulent denunciation. The innocent farmer is released from prison and his daughter returns to her farmstead.
